From artesian water to a community on the lake.
The story of Moree Water Park began with something that has shaped our region for generations: Moree's artesian water.
For more than a century, spent artesian water from Moree's famous Hot Artesian Pools was discharged into the Mehi River. The need to find a more sustainable way to manage this water created an opportunity to think differently about what it could become.
Moree Plains Shire Council, in consultation with Moree Water Ski Club, developed an innovative idea: reuse the water to create a purpose-built community water park within the Evergreen Precinct, approximately 10 kilometres south of Moree.
An Idea Takes Shape
What began as an environmental solution grew into a vision for a major recreational facility for the region.
Moree Water Park was designed to provide opportunities for waterskiing, boating, training and competition, while creating a facility capable of supporting broader community recreation.
The development included two 800-metre tournament-standard waterski lakes, constructed to competition standards, along with a 1.2-kilometre recreational circuit lake with two 100-metre-wide runs.
Artesian water is reused within the lake system, turning what was once discharged water into an asset that can be enjoyed by the community.
Built by Moree
Creating the lakes was only the beginning. With the support of Moree Plains Shire Council and the wider community, Moree Water Ski Club took on an active role in developing, maintaining and operating the facility.
Much of what visitors see today has been shaped by the contribution of volunteers, members, local businesses, sponsors and supporters who have donated their time, skills, equipment and resources.
That community spirit remains at the centre of MWSC today.
The Next Chapter
Today, Moree Water Park is home to a growing community of skiers, families, boat owners and supporters.
Our lakes host recreational skiing, training, competitions, coaching and social events, while our summer Club Nights give members the chance to simply come together and enjoy being on the water.
We continue to develop the Park with the same philosophy that helped create it: community, participation and a willingness to get involved.
The facility may have started with an innovative solution for Moree's artesian water, but what has grown around it is something much bigger.
More than a lake. It’s a lifestyle.
